Like a helping of broccoli, local elections are the ones that are most often passed over and left on the plate. Just like that green vegetable that is really good for you, most people choose to ignore the healthiest and most important part simply because it lacks the sizzle of the big steak next to it. Your local election determines everything about your neighborhood and life. It also comprises a majority of your taxes.

Election days without a presidential or congressional seat often garner the least turnout. The idea that local issues are unimportant is probably associated with the lack of press and visibility. Candidates at a town or county level often do not grab front-page headlines or have the money to bombard you with robocalls and large billboards. Theirs is a grassroots campaign and is solely dependent on how much they want it, how many doors they knock on, and if they can count on two or three close friends to help them get out the vote. It is absent the machine. It is real people that you can shake hands with and walk up to at any time.

We choose to ignore these candidates for some inescapable reasons. Perhaps we are too busy, the kids are too loud or their lack of presidential stature doesn’t presume the level of importance. These…
