All you need to save the world is a shovel. It is a simple tool that is as old as humanity. Whenever you want to find something, build a foundation, or discover the painful truth you have to dig.

Dig deeper, dig up the dirt, or dug into a hole. You can take these phrases in many ways metaphorically but I am referring to the physical and exhausting act of digging.

The act of putting tool to ground is also energetic, relaxing, creative, and rehabilitating. In performing the physical act, the metaphors all become true.

About six years ago a tornado passed through our neighborhood and tore through trees, homes, and lives. Thankfully, my family was safe, but my yard and driveway were filled with huge, uprooted trees that were the victims of this brief and powerful wind.

If you happen to be reading this from the fifth floor walk-up of a city apartment you may not appreciate the power of nature as much as those in a more rural setting. Watching the missile-like precision of a tree limb as it soars through the air and crashes through your roof, pool, or deck is a minuscule display of its power. As I watched one dance through the air it was purposeful in its target and landing. I ran to the basement for cover.
